Advises Hartmann never to write a symphony, "Or if you do get it done ONCE and then let it die, as its far cheaper that [sic] to try to make 'contacts' and get it played other places..."

Hartmann was born in Hungary, but emigrated as a child to the United States. He began a career as a concert violinist while still a child in 1887. During his career he was very active in the promotion of new music and so developed a wide correspondence with many important composers.
